Programme Overview

About this Programme

There is a point in a hospitality or tourism career where the problems stop being operational and start being awkward. A destination is losing visitors to somewhere cheaper. An attraction needs reinventing. A resort is being asked what its environmental impact actually is. This award is pitched at those questions rather than at daily service.

Qualifi describes it as dealing with complex and challenging organisational issues, closely linked to real-world and workplace challenges, testing and developing what learners already bring from work. Judgement is expected: the qualification asks for creative, practical responses to organisational problems, through what it calls an action-based approach.

Sustainability in tourism and hospitality management opens the published subject list, which is telling. Operations management in tourism and resort operations, management of visitor attractions, tourism destination management, cultural tourism management, entrepreneurship in the sector, employability and development, and a research project make up the rest. The award carries 240 credits at number 610/3386/8.

Why Choose

Why Choose This Programme?

01

Sustainability first, not last

It opens the published subject list rather than appearing as a closing topic, which reflects where the sector's pressure now sits.

02

Destinations as a management problem

Tourism destination management treats a whole place, not a single venue, as the thing being run.

03

Visitor attractions covered specifically

A dedicated subject on managing attractions, which operate quite differently from hotels.

04

Your own research project

A full project subject, the clearest difference from the introductory Level 3 award in this field.

05

Cultural tourism

Treated as its own discipline, relevant anywhere heritage and culture drive visitor numbers.

06

Entrepreneurship in context

Starting something in this sector is covered within the programme rather than left to general business theory.

An internationally recognised pathway awarded by Qualifi.

Why It Fits Gulf Tourism Ambitions

01

Destination building is live policy

Several Gulf states are constructing tourism destinations outright, which is exactly what destination management addresses.

02

Sustainability now gets asked about

Regional developments face growing scrutiny of environmental impact, and this treats it as a management subject.

03

Attractions are opening fast

Museums, theme parks and heritage sites are multiplying, and managing them is a distinct skill set.

04

A shorter degree finish

The top-up year design means a degree may be one year away rather than three for an experienced manager.

05

Built for operators too

Entrepreneurship is a full subject, which suits the region's many independent travel and hospitality businesses.

06

Check the subject list

Only eight subjects are published for 240 credits. Ask your centre for the complete specification before paying.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are only eight subjects listed for 240 credits?

We noticed that too, and we cannot explain it from what Qualifi publishes. Comparable Qualifi awards at 240 credits typically list twelve subjects. The likeliest reading is that the page shows one half of a combined Level 4 and Level 5 programme, but the page nowhere says so, and we are not going to assert something the awarding body has not stated. Ask your centre for the full Centre Specification before you enrol.

What does "dove-tail into a top-up year" mean in practice?

It means the Level 5 content is built to line up with the final year of a UK undergraduate degree, so a university can slot you in at that point rather than making you start over. It describes the design intent. Whether a particular university accepts you, and onto which course, is that university's decision — On sister awards at this level, Qualifi prints that condition beside the route itself.

I manage a hotel but have no qualifications. Can I apply?

On the published entry routes, yes. Managerial work experience combined with ambition and clear career goals is listed as a way in by itself, with no certificate alongside. The centre assesses whether your experience is enough, so describe the scale of what you run — team size, budget, responsibilities — rather than just naming your job title.

Where does this sit against the Level 3 hospitality diploma?

Almost entirely. The Level 3 award is open entry, 120 credits, and introduces the two industries at a basic level. This expects a Level 3 or 4 qualification, managerial experience or a first degree, runs to 240 credits, and deals with destinations, sustainability, culture and your own research. One is where you start; this is where you prepare to run things.

Is there an English requirement?

Not one that Qualifi publishes for this particular award. Its page lists three entry routes and none mentions IELTS or a minimum age, although other Qualifi diplomas at the same level do state 18 and over with IELTS 6. Rather than assume another award's rules apply, ask your centre. Centres may also set their own language checks regardless of what the awarding body requires.

What is the research project?

It appears as one of the eight published subjects, and Qualifi gives no further detail about its length, format or assessment on the qualification page. Based on where it sits, expect an independent piece of work applying what you have studied to a real problem, supervised by your centre. The centre will tell you the scope and the deadlines, since it designs and assesses the delivery.
